Because Warts That Won't Go Away Need Something Different
Warts can be surprisingly persistent. You may have waited for one to disappear on its own, tried over-the-counter freezing products or topical treatments, or treated the same area repeatedly only to have the wart remain or return. Although warts are common and usually benign, they can become painful, irritated, embarrassing, or simply frustrating when they interfere with everyday life.
Warts are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that infect the outer layers of the skin. They can develop almost anywhere on the body and may look different depending on their location and the type of wart involved. Common warts often develop on the hands and fingers, while plantar warts occur on the soles of the feet and can become painful with standing or walking. Flat, periungual, and other types of warts can present differently and may require a different treatment approach.
The first step is making sure the growth actually appears consistent with a wart. Not every rough, raised, thickened, or persistent skin lesion is a wart. Corns, calluses, seborrheic keratoses, skin tags, and other benign or potentially concerning skin lesions can sometimes resemble one. If a lesion has an uncertain diagnosis, unusual appearance, rapid change, bleeding, ulceration, or other concerning features, further evaluation or referral may be appropriate before treatment.
When treatment is appropriate, the best approach depends on the wart's location, size, number, thickness, duration, previous treatments, symptoms, and your individual health and skin characteristics. At Hagen Health, treatment options include topical medications, laser, cryotherapy, destruction or removal techniques, or other approaches depending on the clinical situation.
Warts can be difficult to eliminate because treatment removes or destroys infected tissue but does not guarantee that every HPV-infected cell has been eliminated. Some warts therefore require multiple treatments, and recurrence can occur even after an area appears clear. Your immune response also plays an important role in whether a wart persists or resolves.

I evaluate the lesion first, consider what you have already tried, and discuss which treatment options make sense for its location and characteristics. Just as importantly, I will tell you when a lesion does not look like something that should simply be treated as a wart.
