Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial for Rosacea, Sun Damage & Brown Spots.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial

Reduce Redness. Reverse Sun Damage. Restore Clear, Even Skin.

If your skin has developed redness, visible blood vessels, angiomas, sunspots, freckles, or uneven pigmentation, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) may help restore a brighter, more even, and healthier complexion without surgery or significant downtime.

At Hagen Health & Absolute Aesthetics, we use an advanced IPL technology by ALMA Lasers to target unwanted pigmentation and blood vessels while stimulating healthier-looking skin. Treatments are personalized to your skin type, concerns, and long-term goals.

What Is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), often called a photofacial, uses carefully filtered, high-intensity pulses of broad-spectrum light to selectively target pigment (melanin) and blood vessels (hemoglobin) beneath the surface of the skin.

Unlike a laser, which produces a single wavelength of light, IPL delivers multiple wavelengths that allow one treatment to address several common skin concerns simultaneously.

Over the following weeks, your body naturally clears the treated pigment and damaged blood vessels, revealing clearer, more evenly toned skin.

What Conditions Can IPL Treat?

IPL is commonly used to improve both vascular (red) and pigmented (brown) skin concerns.

Red Skin Conditions

  • Rosacea
  • Facial redness
  • Broken capillaries
  • Spider veins (telangiectasias)
  • Flushing
  • Cherry angiomas (red vascular spots)

Brown Pigmented Lesions

  • Sunspots (solar lentigines)
  • Age spots
  • Brown spots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Uneven skin tone

Additional Skin Concerns

  • Mild acne redness
  • Scarring
  • Acne-related discoloration
  • Poikiloderma (sun damage of the neck and chest)
  • Overall skin rejuvenation

How Does IPL Work?

IPL works through a process called selective photothermolysis.

The light energy is absorbed by either:

  • Hemoglobin inside abnormal blood vessels
  • Melanin inside unwanted pigment

The targeted tissue heats and is safely broken down while minimizing injury to surrounding healthy skin.

Your body gradually removes the treated vessels and pigment over the following days and weeks.

IPL for Rosacea

Rosacea is one of the most common reasons patients seek IPL treatment.

While IPL does not cure rosacea, it can significantly reduce:

  • Persistent facial redness
  • Flushing
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Inflammation associated with vascular rosacea

Many patients notice their complexion appears calmer and more even after a series of treatments.

IPL for Sun Damage

Years of UV exposure often lead to:

  • Brown spots
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Redness
  • Fine blood vessels
  • Rough skin texture

IPL targets both red and brown discoloration simultaneously, making it one of the most effective non-invasive treatments for photoaging.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

IPL is commonly performed on:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest (décolletage)
  • Hands
  • Arms
  • Shoulders
  • Upper back
  • Legs

These areas receive the greatest cumulative sun exposure and often respond well to treatment.

What Happens During Treatment?

Most treatments take approximately 20–45 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Patients often describe the sensation as very fast  bright light and heat against the skin.

Cooling measures are used to improve comfort.

What Can I Expect After IPL?

Immediately after treatment, you may experience:

  • Mild redness
  • Warmth similar to a mild sunburn
  • Slight swelling

Brown spots typically become darker over several days before naturally flaking away.

Red blood vessels gradually fade over the following weeks.

Most patients return to normal activities the same day.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Most patients achieve optimal results with:

  • 3–5 treatments
  • Performed approximately 3–4 weeks apart

Maintenance treatments every 6–12 months can help preserve results, particularly for rosacea and ongoing sun exposure.

Is IPL Right for Everyone?

IPL is not appropriate for every skin type or every pigmented lesion.

A consultation is recommended to determine whether IPL is the safest and most effective treatment for your skin concerns.

During your visit, we evaluate:

  • Skin type
  • Medical history
  • Current medications
  • Sun exposure
  • Treatment goals

Alternative treatments may be recommended when appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does IPL hurt?

Most patients tolerate treatment well. The sensation is brief and commonly described as a fast heat.

Will my brown spots disappear after one treatment?

Some pigmentation improves after a single session, but most patients achieve the best results after a series of treatments.

Can IPL treat rosacea?

IPL cannot cure rosacea, but it is one of the most effective non-invasive treatments for reducing persistent redness and visible facial blood vessels.

Can IPL remove sun damage?

Yes. IPL is commonly used to reduce sunspots, age spots, freckles, diffuse redness, and other signs of chronic sun exposure.

Is there downtime?

Downtime is minimal. Most patients return to work immediately, although temporary redness and darkening of pigmented spots are expected.

Can I have other treatments on the same day as my IPL treatment?

Yes! In many cases, IPL can be safely combined with other treatments during the same visit, making it convenient to address multiple concerns at once.

Depending on your skin condition and treatment plan, you may also be able to receive:

Combining treatments can often reduce the number of office visits while helping you achieve your aesthetic goals more efficiently.
